Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sorority found in 1908 (incorporated on January 29, 1913) by a group of sixteen students at the Howard University in Washington, D.C. The sorority was the outcome of the discrimination faced by African-American women in terms of power and opportunities.
The diversified Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority consists of women of different background from around the world. It consists of more than 300,000 members and 1024 chapters. The sorority, which was started with the vision of nine students, has become an international organization. It can be joined by any woman through undergraduate chapters or graduate chapter depending upon her qualification. And even non-member can be a part of it by wearing the items like Alpha Kappa Alpha Shirts, bracelets, pins etc.
Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority aims at improving the social and economic conditions through its service program. Its core working areas are education, health, family, humanity, equity and equality. It is a part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and “By Culture and By Merit” is the motto of the sorority. It is headquartered in Stony Island Ave Chicago, US.
Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority was found on the five basic tenets that include, encouraging high scholastic and ethical standards, promotion of unity and friendship, addressing the problems related to girls, promoting college life, and to provide service to all mankind. It focuses on the continuous development of its members in terms of health education and quality of life.
